Cell phone bugging is a reality now. With it, you can spy on your
employees without being noticed. You can know if they make long
distance calls and try to make you pay for them when they were actually
personal calls. You can know if they arrive late, leave early, or
otherwise lose time that you're paying for. You can know if they are
stealing from you, etc. Most importantly, they will not know how you
got the information.
However, while getting this information secretly has its advantages, the other side of the coin is explaining your employees how you got it in the first place. After all, the reason you use cell phone bugging in the first place is because you want to keep your monitoring secret.
But then, when you ask your employee to explain why he left early the day you went on a trip, what do you say when he asks "How do you know?"
Here are three common answers that business owners that use cell phone bugging say when asked such a question:
- "Don't change the subject, answer my question." This should be your first reaction. An employee asks how you knew mainly to distract attention from his action. By refusing to answer the question, you bring the attention back to him. Plus, it has the psychological effect of making him feel guilty.
- "I have my methods/ways, now answer my question." Yes, it sounds something that a villain from a movie would say, but it's very effective because the employee knows that he's at fault. He will then wonder even more about how you found out but won't pursue the issue.
- "Another employee told me but I'm not telling you who." This answer works better if there are several employees working together. The employee at fault will not know who gave him away. More importantly, even if you stop using cell phone bugging, he will still be afraid of leaving early when other employees are around.
One important thing to remember is that, regardless what you say, it's very important to bring back the attention to the employee's behavior. This will make him nervous and feel guilty. He will not have the focus on figuring out how you found out and make up a good excuse at the same time.
Lastly, cell phone bugging is not a one time trick. An employee will stop losing time on purpose not because you caught him one time, but because you catch him every single time.
